Cancun talks start with a call to the gods

By Juliet Eilperin

With United Nations climate negotiators facing an uphill battle to advance their goal of reducing emissions linked to global warming, it's no surprise that the woman steering the talks appealed to a Mayan goddess Monday.

Christiana Figueres, executive secretary of the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change, invoked the ancient jaguar goddess Ixchel in her opening statement to delegates gathered in Cancun, Mexico, noting that Ixchel was not only goddess of the moon, but also "the goddess of reason, creativity and weaving. May she inspire you -- because today, you are gathered in Cancun to weave together the elements of a solid response to climate change, using both reason and creativity as your tools."

She called for "a balanced outcome" which would marry financial and emissions commitments from industrialized countries aimed at combating climate change with "the understanding of fairness that will guide long-term mitigation efforts."

U.N. climate chief Christiana Figueres places a building block in a miniature Mayan pyramid at the site of climate negotiations in Cancun, Mexico, Sunday, Nov. 28, 2010. The "Pyramid of Hope" monument was erected by the TckTckTck climate awareness campaign to symbolize the many building blocks needed for a new climate agreement. (AP Photo/Karl Ritter)

"Excellencies, the goddess Ixchel would probably tell you that a tapestry is the result of the skilful interlacing of many threads," said Figueres, who hails from Costa Rica and started her greetings in Spanish before switching to English. "I am convinced that 20 years from now, we will admire the policy tapestry that you have woven together and think back fondly to Cancun and the inspiration of Ixchel."

Delegates from 193 countries are gathered in Cancun for the two-week meeting, which kicked off today at 10:20 a.m. local time, or 11:20 a.m. Eastern. Mexican President Felipe Calderon, a major proponent of action on climate change, attended the opening.

Two weeks from now, we'll have a sense of whether Ixchel -- and the delegates -- were listening to Figueres's appeal.

Aside from GE, does anyone else know of any other Fortune 500 companies who are going to make money off of the current global warming scare? While my sympathies are with the masses, there is no sense in losing out on a once in a lifetime investment opportunity. If the rubes are willing to pay to assuage their greatest fears by opening their checkbooks, I think it is someone's bounden duty to help them.

I say, let the massive redistribution of wealth begin. For my part, I am only asking for a modest slice of the "vig." All I want is my fair share.

Decades of hysterical fear mongering and out right science fraud concerning global warming and climate change have created a sort of “green fatigue.” Climate has become a goldmine of scary propaganda to fatten eco-group fundraising. Al Gore would become the world’s first “carbon billionaire.” Global government regulators have spent (or proposed to spend) hundreds of billions of dollars to control climate based primarily upon U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports and policies.

Last year’s “climategate” scandal began with the publication of thousands of U.N. climate scientist e-mails that revealed their eco-biases. These biases may be mitigated by the Inter Academy Council (IAC) reforms that would end the chronic exaggerations about global warming coming from the U.N.

What remains as disturbing about the U.N.’s climate culture is the socialist governance that has now been openly advocated by members of the IPCC. Several members meeting this week in Cancun at the annual conference to replace the 2012-expiring Kyoto Protocols have spoken in pure Marxist-socialist principles – wealth redistribution.

A Chinese member said that multi-billion dollar Western developed-nation payments would be the key to success of the Cancun meeting. And, co-chairman of the IPCC's third working group, Ottmar Edenhofer, has stated, "One must say clearly that we redistribute de facto the world's wealth by climate policy.... One has to free oneself from the illusion that international climate policy is environmental policy."

The IPCC meeting in Cancun is not expected to accomplish much more than to subtly shift the operative regulatory language from “climate change” to “global biodiversity,” and attempt to shakedown developed countries for billions in order to fund underdeveloped countries under the guise of environmental and social justice. Karl Marx would be most proud.

It is clear that socialist ideologies and cultish environmentalism have replaced prudent science and economics in U.N. climate policy. Militant environmentalism and green-obsessed bureaucrats have become an “axis of antagonism” that we can no longer afford.

Amusingly, while we in America fiddle away, other nations are leading the charge and reaping the increased GDP rewards of new tech exports for carbon emission reduction.

Every time a global warming doubter in America buys an import, there's carbon tax in it.

Because the EU and Australia and New Zealand and most other countries already have it - but since we aren't signatories to any treaties, we pay full fare instead of a discounted rate for it.

We have the resources to sustain just under 200 million people....and we're 310 million and growing. What a country!...the mormons and their belief in large families will save us - NOT! The failed theory of Climate Change was a business for the greedy, and intellectual fodder for the ignorants and ideologues and is now laughingly known to history as the era of environMENTAL Disco science.
Meanwhile, the UN had allowed carbon trading to trump 3rd world fresh water relief, starvation rescue and 3rd world education for just over 25 years of climate control instead of population control. BIG MISTAKE!

Posted by: paulmerrifield | November 29, 2010 4:07 PM | Report abuse

I suppose that what nobody would do at Cancún is to look at the actual climate measurements. They show nothing unusual whatsoever.

Instead there would be a lot of talk about our children and grandchildren.

Here is a rough idea of what they are ideally aiming for. People would be allocated an emissions quota, essentially an energy quota since 90% of the energy comes out of fossil fuel now.

Say your daughter goes to college to become a doctor or engineer or scientist. She is using energy, flying there, air conditioning - she needs to concentrate for exams, etc. So she would be penalized for exceeding the emissions quota.

Some other kid not willing or not able to be equally productive would naturally have a smaller carbon footprint, so he would be rewarded with carbon credits which he could sell to your daughter for a profit.

The transfer would be done not directly but through the same financial whizz-kids who securitized mortgages (a whole cohort was ready to start trading if the energy bill was approved and are now looking for something else to do.)

The fact that this year is almost as warm as the warmest year ever, 1998, which MEANS PRECISELY THAT that temperatures have been going down for 12 years, nowhere accelerated by CO2 as the IPCC and Hansen predicted, wouldn't matter a bit.

The fact that the sea level rise rate has not changed for 150 years and glaciers are melting at the same rate as 60 and 120 years ago wouldn't matter a bit, and the discussion of actual measurements would be brutally suppressed.

All this when in the last few years the US found enough natural gas for 100 years of cheap use at least, enough to keep our children and grandchildren in schools and make their lives productive rather than stunted...

As a reference - I didn't make any of this up - read the very recent interview of Ottmar Edenhofer, one of the IPCC sectional chairs, in the Swiss Neue Zürcher Zeitung.

QUOTES:

"That will change immediately if global emission rights are distributed. If this happens, on a per capita basis, then Africa will be the big winner, and huge amounts of money will flow there."

"One has to free oneself from the illusion that international climate policy is environmental policy. This has almost nothing to do with environmental policy anymore, with problems such as deforestation or the ozone hole."

"There must be penalties and incentives: global CO 2-tariffs..."

The IPCC fellows, media figures as much as any, are in urgent need of a Hollywood type manager. Nobody is paying any attention to them anymore.

They meet in Cancún and the Wikileaks take the headlines.

Now imagine if a dashing bandido would take a few key delegates. After talking to them he would have an epiphany and would accept as ransom carbon credits...

WHO NEEDS A JAMES BOND VILLAIN

to say "VEE SHALL TAKE OVAH ZAH VAARLD!"?

Who needs conspiracy theories?

Who needs email leaks?

Here you have an IPCC leader saying in his own words, in the Swiss NZZ interview:

***************************************************************

Q: Until now, many think of aid when they hear development policies.

A: That will change immediately if global emission rights are distributed. If this happens, on a per capita basis, then Africa will be the big winner, and huge amounts of money will flow there. This will have enormous implications for development policy. And it will raise the question if these countries can deal responsibly with so much money at all.

Q: That does not sound anymore like the climate policy that we know.

A: Basically it's a big mistake to discuss climate policy separately from the major themes of globalization. The climate summit in Cancun at the end of the month is not a climate conference, but one of the largest economic conferences since the Second World War. Why? Because we have 11,000 gigatons of carbon in the coal reserves in the soil under our feet - and we must emit only 400 gigatons in the atmosphere if we want to keep the 2-degree target. 11 000 to 400 - there is no getting around the fact that most of the fossil reserves must remain in the soil.

Q: De facto, this means an expropriation of the countries with natural resources. This leads to a very different development from that which has been triggered by development policy.

A: First of all, developed countries have basically expropriated the atmosphere of the world community. But one must say clearly that we redistribute de facto the world's wealth by climate policy. Obviously, the owners of coal and oil will not be enthusiastic about this. One has to free oneself from the illusion that international climate policy is environmental policy. This has almost nothing to do with environmental policy anymore, with problems such as deforestation or the ozone hole.

...

***************************************************************

The man is Ottmar Edenhofer, Professor of the Economics of Climate Change in Potsdam, cochair of the IPCC group on mitigation.

An unassumingly looking accountant like bureaucrat, the man is a conspiracy theory all by himself.

Exactly, like Spain creating thousands of "green" jobs; and once they rant the numbers they found themselves only losing 2.2 jobs per "green" job created.

We need that here, if we created say 10% "green" jobs we could have 30% unemployment instead of 10%; which clearly is a good plan. Oh and energy and transportation costs would go up so you'd pay more for everything.

But who doesn't want fewer jobs and higher prices? Oh wait, that might be me...

We all know that the only force that can change the earth's climate is the sun, that we have no control over. Just look at the centuries befor us...how did their global warming take place? I bet it was no man-made CO2 that caused it. I suppose we cause the increase in temperature on the other planets in our solar system as well? Invoking the Goddess of reason and creativity in the name of idiotic fear-mongering is beyond arrogant. Maybe if they were actually discussing the many very real environmental catastrophes it would seem less hypocritical, instead of the one made-up one that they seem to think taxation will fix. (What about rampant radiation poisoning in the "war zones" the US created in the Mideast? How about vaccination and autism links? The rapacious mining and drilling that is still killing the Gulf? Where's THEIR movement? But no, Gulf reporters and other whistle-blowers are harassed, threatened, arrested and intimidated into silence, showing what a lie their "concern for the environment" really is) What an insult to the Mayan culture that the Spanish nearly wiped out as a result of their many "adventures" in the New World. She had best hope Ixchel doesn't answer her prayer, after what's been done to Ixchel's people I doubt she would be kind in her response. Everything in this summit runs counter to what the Mayans believed. Or did I forget the part where the Mayans levied unsustainable taxation upon other people they did not speak for, then used intellectual dishonesty and the economics of scientific endeavor to quell disagreement?

I definitely believe climate change is taking place. Why shouldn't it take place. It has been changing, with the pendulum swinging one way, and then the other since long before man walked the face of the earth.

What a field day Gore and his cronies would have had were they around when glaciers covered all of what is now New England other large portions of what is now the United States.

Can you imagine the horror at the speed at which those glaciers were receding, and the oceans rising.

Speaking of the oceans, did you know that on three separate occasions, the Great Barrier Reef was sixty feet above sea level?

And, speaking of oceans rising. Do you know what the single greatest cause is for the oceans rising? It is erosion, though for some odd reason, it is never mentioned.

Eons from now, should the sun still be alive, and barring further geological upheavals, the surface of the earth will be underwater, from the result of wind and rain, both of which are natural occurrences. Any subsequent ice ages will also grind down the mountains on their southward journeys in the northern hemisphere.

The piddily things these global warming charlatans are preaching about are insignificant to past climatalogic events.

All you lemmings are welcome to follow Al Gore, and his merry band of frauds off the edge of the cliff with my blessings. And my sympathy.

Rothbard argued that the entire population of the planet could live comfortably within the state of Texas --- without HongKong-style high-rise tenements. The statist societies --- socialist, communist, fascist, Nazi, etc, etc --- are unable to sustain their populace, but they will not convert to capitalism because this would severely limit the power of the political classes to suck the blood of the people whom they pretend to give a rat's axx about. Please cite for me the hour, the day, the month, the year, or century, that the climate WASN'T changing. By the way, how does one produce a temperature graph that's flat at one end, with a sudden rise at the other (hockey stick) when the earth's temperature at the beginning point was 3 degrees C warmer than today? Answer, garbage in, garbage out. The so called hockey stick graph is a mathematical prostitute pimped by the left as a fact. Well, you're entitled to your own opinion, but not your own facts. Notice how they avoid peer review when that would validate their claims? I'm mean if you're so certain that what you claim is irrefutable why wouldn't you welcome the scrutiny that would prove you correct? I think we all know the answer to that question.

I know you're a liar every time you evoke the word denier with its historically toxic implications. Despite the repulsiveness of these tactics, you press on, on our dime. As in every Ponzi scheme you'll one day be compelled to explain your behavior to the people you plundered, and they'll respond accordingly.

Over the last roughly 600 million years of climate data that we can ascertain using various scientific and statistically valid methods, there is no correlation between the atmospheric levels of the trace gas carbon dioxide and global temperature. But there are correlations between solar cycles, changes in the Earth's magnetic field, and input from the cosmos in the form of cosmic rays (which affect cloud cover), and perturbations in the Earth's orbit. Yet we are supposed to believe that we, mankind, are somehow responsible for any climate change. What stupidity!

Al Gore even left out all records of The Little Ice Age (1400 to 1800 cold period) in his hockey stick curve, which lied by showing a dramatic temperature rise in the 20th century. Yet his idiot manifesto movie "An Inconvenient Truth" is still shown in public school science classrooms across the nation as being "truth". We are indoctrinating an entire generation to believe in the hoax of global warming. Taxpayers should be mad as hell.

Even the data set used by the UN scientists to come up with their dire predictions is suspect and unreliable. Much of the "warming" at many of the sensors can be accounted for because of the increased urbanization land use near them. Some sensors have even been moved hundreds of miles from their original location. Such corrupted data can't be used for an 8th grade science project, let alone for calling for massive tax increases and transfers of wealth. Start all over and let REAL, openly conducted, peer reviewed science work.

If you want to look at science and the facts, check out:

“I am a skeptic…Global warming has become a new religion.” - Nobel Prize Winner for Physics, Ivar Giaever.

“Since I am no longer affiliated with any organization nor receiving any funding, I can speak quite frankly….As a scientist I remain skeptical. Atmospheric Scientist Dr. Joanne Simpson, the first woman in the world to receive a PhD in meteorology, and formerly of NASA, who has authored more than 190 studies and has been called “among the most preeminent scientists of the last 100 years.”

Warming fears are the “worst scientific scandal in the history…When people come to know what the truth is, they will feel deceived by science and scientists.” - UN IPCC Japanese Scientist Dr. Kiminori Itoh, an award-winning PhD environmental physical chemist.

“The IPCC has actually become a closed circuit; it doesn’t listen to others. It doesn’t have open minds… I am really amazed that the Nobel Peace Prize has been given on scientifically incorrect conclusions by people who are not geologists,” - Indian geologist Dr. Arun D. Ahluwalia at Punjab University and a board member of the UN-supported International Year of the Planet

Posted by: moonwatcher2001 | December 4, 2010 9:41 AM | Report abuse

Even the leading UN scientist (Dr. Jones) has admitted there has been no scientifically significant global warming since 1995! And some of the original scientists who came up with the idea of global warming are now saying that naturally occurring changes in ocean currents can account for 50% of any change in the Earth's climate. Surprised? Not really.

Don't confuse (as many people do) pollution with the naturally occurring trace gas, Carbon Dioxide. Pollution is bad...all sorts of bad chemical compounds in our atmosphere, rivers and streams, lakes, and our oceans (particularly by India and China). But carbon dioxide is not a pollutant, despite the Obama administration's attempts to categorize it as such.

As a concerned citizen, with a bit of scientific knowledge (I'm an aerospace engineer), I want answers to these questions:

Why did the IPCC scientists sit on their data, unwilling to share it for ten years? Science only moves forward if results can be peer reviewed and duplicated independently.

Why was their record keeping so shoddy?

Why did they falsify data when it didn't confirm their preconceived theories?

Why didn't they monitor their sensors more carefully to know that much of any temperature rise was the result of increased urbanization around those sensors, and not due to any real rise in the Earth's temperature? This is Garbage In, Garbage Out in computer programming parlance.

Why do ALL of the 23 competing IPCC computer models ignore the Sun or any other input from the cosmos, but instead rely on one, perhaps insignificant, factoid of their own making (carbon dioxide), which the "greenies" have latched onto as an energy tax scheme?

A call to the gods of an extinct people! How appropriate! The UN climate buffoons and their U.S. counterparts want the world to return to pre-Industrial Revolution simplicity, reading by candlelight ...

OK. If they want that, if they really want that, then we need to reduce the Earth's population by about 5 billion people. Open huge, deep-pit graves and push them in. Dump a billion or so, in ground form, into the sea. Why?

The developed countries are using advanced techniques to create food, clothing, and goods for even the poorest to use in daily life.

Because this effort increases carbon emissions (in their view) and increases global warming (in their view), we simply must stop.

Why allow these marginal people to consume resources and lead to increased carbon emissions?

Do what the Mayans did -- cut out their hearts or throw them into a volcano. We can do that, right?

By selectively burying the five billion parasites in the earth or oceans, plant life will flourish and all of our ills would be cured. And the Mayan Gods would be happy.

Have a great day.

Mayan leadership practiced human sacrifice to mystify, horrify, and coerce the fearful, ignorant masses depending on them. They instructed minions that only the barbaric spectacle would quench the gods' wrath, ensuring good harvests and protection from plague.

Too bad climate change got the best of 'em. Eventually droughts and plagues took their toll, causing chaos and a total collapse of the Mayan Empire: The people have vested themselves too heavily in myths and fabrications.

So it is with our UN and their global warming fraud. Rather than admit the wrong, the unsupportable, appointed(!!) leaders continue to ply the masses with hysteria and imagined calamity, in order to mystify, horrify and coerce all us ignorant folks.

Thank my God we live in an information age, where we can bypass the chains of command and share good information about the lies, the cheating, the theft that goes on at the UN. Their golden goose is cooked!

I don’t recall seeing or reading about any massive resume filled with world interaction from any false god or goddess (like Ixchel) as there is for the one and ONLY God. Pray He doesn’t strike you down for your pestilence.
