When Maggie (Kim Basinger of L.A. Confidential and Batman) comes home to her apartment building one night, she discovers her estranged, drug-addict sister Jenna huddling in the doorway. Jenna promptly abandons her newborn baby with Maggie, who proceeds to raise the child as her own, despite evidence of autism. But as the little girl, Cody, gets older, what seemed to be autism starts to manifest itself in more startling ways. At the same time, a series of child murders are sweeping the city--murders conducted by a mysterious cult with supernatural matters on their mind. Bless the Child starts promisingly, with subdued, creepy scenes contrasted with more outrageous moments like swarms of computer-generated rats. Fans of religious horror movies will enjoy its twist on The Omen, with an angelic child instead of a demonic one--only the child is still pretty eerie. The special effects go a little overboard towards the end. Jimmy Smits (Price of Glory) costars as an FBI cult chaser, and Rufus Sewell (Dark City, Cold Comfort Farm) gives a pleasantly restrained performance as the charismatic cult leader. Also featuring Christina Ricci as a cult escapee and Ian Holm as a Jesuit priest. --Bret Fetzer

This is not the worst movie I've ever seen but it was the most disappointing.
I saw the almost 5 star total, the fact that it was about God and the devil and then wow! The cast! This is exactly what I like.
And then I watched the movie. Firstly, why was everyone so bad in it? Is that bad direction? That gets to be a bore after a while. Secondly, WHAT was going on? When I thought 3 or 4 movies were filmng at the same time. The performances were terrifically bad, but not funny bad.
Lastly, why was the girl so special? What was the point?
What did her extreme power of spinning plates going to do in the world? If old Stark can convince her to his side, what does that prove?
This movie has enough plot holes to fill the universe. Why?
Why couldn't they have just settled down for a couple days and just made a good movie?
My favorite line from my favorite scene, where "Mim" defies the detective's instruction to stay away from the devil-worshipping-serial-killer-evangelist and goes, alone, to the devil's lair, "I've never fired a gun in my life, but from this distance..." You never tell an evil demon you're trying to intimidate that you've never fired a gun. That's literally the last thing you should ever say.
Bassinger's character does everything wrong - beginning with the fact that she raised her junky sister's child for 6 years without ever bothering to secure legal custody. Her persistent dim wittedness puts the child's life at risk at every turn. Bassinger acts every lame scene with same dull, muted, throaty, monotone half whisper - no matter the circumstances.
Jimmy Smits and the little girl were highlights, but not enough to make up for the poor writing and Bassinger's painful acting.
I don't know if the cast, crew and all their family members gave 5-star ratings, but there's no way actual independent movie watchers could honestly say they enjoyed this trainwreck.
This is an older film But it still holds up. (2000)
Kim and Jimmy are great. The little girl does a brilliant acting job.
Watch it....You won't be sorry.
I can understand some of the hate on this movie, but I consider it a fun watch, so long as you know what you're getting into. I didn't see this movie until 2019, and I'm glad I did.

Not the most original plot, being similar to ‘The Omen’ and many other films of its type, but it is good as Maggie tries to understand events going on around her. This is more a suspense thriller as the child becomes a target of ‘evil doers’ and at first you don’t know who can be trusted and what the girl is really up to.
The single disc features play, scene selection, special features [Interviews, trailer, commentary and Tv spots] and subtitles [English on, hard of hearing on or subtitles off]. Will probably not suit gore’ horror fans as it’s mainly psychological as you try to figure it out at the start and then it plays on the emotions in the second half. A good late night chiller worthy of a ***** entertainment value.
