This is a brief book that, because of its brevity, leaves you thinking that much more could have been said - and probably should have. Kendall does a good job opening up the basics of the assurance of salvation. The problem is that he introduces some ideas (like the imputation of the faith of Christ being synonymous with the righteousness of God demonstrated in the active and passive obedience of Christ) that deserve a far more detailed and extensive study. Good for a evening read, though - or to give to someone who is having doubts about their salvation.

A ditty little book which could be better but it does touch on Abraham's lapse of faith when Sarah was growing older and older without any prospect of a child. What would you do if you had to wait until your 60s or 70s for God to fulfil what he called you to do? How would you spend those decades going by without any real progress? It doesn't answer the question, but it certainly highlights the fact that even Abraham had backslidden in his faith. In Scripture it is not so obvious, but in Jacob we really experience what it is like to spiritually wander in a backslidden state. You get a real sense of his personality meltdown and sense of loss when Joseph is stolen from his life. There needs to be a book about Abraham's eleven years of waiting for a son.

Because the book is only 64 pages it is nowhere near long enough to explore deep issues, but it does highlight areas of lack in your faith, particularly in relation to fellowship. The powerlessness of waiting for God to turn up and fulfil his promise in your life can be painful. What the book doesn't address is whether or not God repays those lost years waiting.
